California continues to fail children and fall behind other states in delivering essential preventive health and dental care for young children in Medi-Cal. Through the important and comprehensive Early Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit, young children in Medi-Cal are entitled to preventive care services, including: multiple well-child visits and screenings in the first few years of life, immunizations for preventable childhood diseases, and preventive dental care. This snapshot compares California’s performance data (or lack of reporting) to the national median of Medicaid programs for young children’s preventive care covered under EPSDT.
