Urgent problems, proven solutions

Childhood vision disorders are common, but aren’t always identified and treated. The pandemic has exacerbated the problem. The vast majority of childhood vision disorders can be treated fairly simply, with eyeglasses or contact lenses. The American Academy of Pediatrics and American Academy of Ophthalmology both assert that vision screening, and if indicated, eye exams, should be administered to newborns, and then again around age 3 and continuing at regular intervals throughout childhood. If vision problems are undiagnosed and untreated, they negatively impact a child’s development, self-esteem, ability to read and succeed in school, and overall well-being.
