Children Now’s Statement on Gov. Newsom’s 2023-24 State Budget May Revision

OAKLAND, CA—Children Now President Ted Lempert issued the following statement today in response to Governor Newsom’s 2023-24 California state budget May Revision:

Since there are other areas where additional funding is being proposed in this tight budget year, child care must also be on that list.  We need to move with urgency to an alternative cost-based rate system, and the Governor and Legislature need to make a substantial down payment this year of at least $1.5 billion.  There is an urgent need to support our child care workforce, ensure access so parents and guardians can get jobs, and provide the early care and education that our kids need to thrive.
