Take Action to Improve Educational Supports for California’s 1.4 million English Learners

Did you know…

  • One of every four public school students in California are classified as English learners
  • California’s English learners represent more than 60 different languages
  • 60 percent of children, birth to age five, coming into public education live in homes where English is not the only language spoken

California students who are English learners are an asset to our state’s culture, community, and economy. The state must provide supports to English learners that will help them more meaningfully engage and succeed in school.

The first step to strengthening support for English learners was the state’s development of the California English Learner Roadmap. Organizational members of The Children’s Movement members are encouraged to sign onto a letter urging the state to fund capacity-building programs to help educators implement the Roadmap.

Additionally, everyone can help build momentum for this campaign by sharing the following social media posts:

  2. Calling or emailing your legislator and telling them that it is critical to fund supports for English learners and urge them to include $12 million for Communities of Practice to support educators in implementing the English Learner Roadmap.
