Medi-Cal: The Cornerstone of Ca Kids' Health Care

More than 5.7 million California kids have Medi-Cal.1

Over half (54%) of California’s children are in Medi-Cal; Medi-Cal is the state Medicaid program for low-income people.2

They get health coverage that includes: preventive care, emergency care, mental health care, and dental care.3

Kids who are covered by Medicaid: Do better in school and miss fewer school days; Are more likely to graduate from high school and go to college; Have fewer emergency visits and hospitalizations as adults and; Earn more money as adults.4

Because of Medi-Cal, the uninsured rate for California’s children has been cut by more than half since 2001 (from 10.3% in 2001 to 4.5% in 2014).5

We are one step closer to ensuring that all kids living in California have health coverage! Since the May 2016 expansion of Medi-Cal to #Health4AllKids, about 142,000 undocumented children now have access to comprehensive Medi-Cal coverage. Thousands more still need to be enrolled, so let’s finish the job.6

Based on these data, we estimate that there are roughly 35,000 – 75,000 undocumented eligible for Medi-Cal but not yet enrolled.
