Social Media Outreach Summer Fellow

Children Now is a nonpartisan umbrella research, policy development, and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting children’s health, education and well‐being in California. Children Now also leads The Children’s Movement of California, a grassroots network of more than 3,100 business, education, parent, civil rights, faith, and community‐based organizations, as well as thousands of individuals, working together to make children a top priority in public policy. College and graduate students are invited to apply to be a Social Media Outreach Summer Fellow for Children Now. The Fellow will support the communications efforts of Children Now by enhancing our social media presence and outreach related to key children’s issues, publications, opportunities, advocacy campaigns, and resources. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in learning more about non-profit outreach, communications, research and advocacy efforts.

The Fellow will work in the Oakland office, and will report to the Director of Development and Outreach. The Fellow will work approximately 10 hours per week for about 16 weeks. Fellow will be paid $15 an hour.

Projects include:

  • General oversight and social media account maintenance, including managing followers, Twitter lists, coordinating responses to messages, and ensuring that all accounts are accurate and up-to-date;

  • Generate, review, and schedule social media content for all social media accounts associated with the organization including, but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn;

  • Track key social media analytics on a regular basis, including Google Analytics, and help to identify relevant trends and help to develop more effective campaigns;

  • Update and track content calendars for the organization’s policy projects;

  • Compile and present social media analytics reports;

  • Research social media accounts, including key influencers;

  • Identify social media accounts for key organizations in our networks, including The Children’s Movement; and

  • Research and testing out social media analytic tools.

Desired skills and experience:

  • A commitment to improving the well-being of CA’s children and removing racial and other inequities that limit children’s opportunities to reach their full potential;

  • Interest or experience in children’s advocacy and policy change;

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills;

  • Ability to work with key social media tools (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Hootsuite) and Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Excellent attention to detail and a high motivation to learn;

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team; and

  • Preferably a current college or graduate
