New Federal Regulations Put Children’s Health at Risk

Oakland, CA — Children Now strongly opposes the final public charge rule issued by the Trump Administration. The rule change threatens the health and well-being of children in California. When proposed last fall, the “public charge” regulation drew more than 266,000 public comments, overwhelmingly in opposition. Children Now organized more than 700 comments opposing the rule through The Children’s Movement. Nationally, pediatricians, hospitals, health insurers, public health officials, and other organizations and leaders focused on health opposed the plan.

In response, Children Now president Ted Lempert issued the following statement:

“This regulation is threatening the health of our kids and hard-working families. Nearly half of the state’s children live in immigrant families. And they are already facing stressful experiences that hinder their development and ability to thrive,” Lempert continued. “Families will be forced to choose between accessing vital health programs for their children or risk being able to remain together in our country. Children and families should not be punished for using services they qualify for and that help support their health and overall well-being. We must continue to support our immigrant families so that all children can thrive.”
