I have three sons, ages 12, 8 and 6, that have Type 1 Diabetes. Each of our boys poke their finger to test their blood sugar 8-10 times a day. Before they received insulin pumps, they needed shots of insulin every time they ate. Dealing with Type 1 Diabetes is a delicate balance of eating and then giving the correct amount of insulin. Too much insulin causes the blood sugar to drop and they could pass out, have seizures or even go into a coma. Too little insulin causes high blood sugars, which can lead to debilitating health problems down the road. The strips we use to test their blood sugars cost more than $700 a month alone. If we didn’t have good insurance we would be in serious trouble financially.
The kids have had Healthy Families insurance for the last several years, and it has allowed each of them to get an insulin pump. These pumps cost about $7,000 each, but they provide my kids with a more natural steady flow of insulin 24 hours a day. These pumps keep my kids out of the doctor’s office and the hospital. They have made diabetes much more manageable and have given our boys the opportunity to live more normal lives.
I can’t imagine what life would be like without insulin pumps. We are so fortunate to have Healthy Families, because I know there are so many families who cannot afford an insulin pump. I know how hard it must be and it just makes my heart ache for them.
