I’m a single mother of three who works two part-time jobs. Neither position offers health benefits. One morning my oldest, Gabby, woke up with a large bump on her neck. I took her to the doctor right away and she was hospitalized for tests, a CAT scan and a biopsy. Gabby had thyroid cancer. That was very hard to hear. I was in shock. The surgery Gabby needed was delicate and had the potential to damage her ability to speak. Thankfully, Gabby had excellent doctors who removed the tumor successfully and without complications. Gabby is now on a special diet in preparation for radiation treatment at the City of Hope Hospital.
I’m very happy that we have Healthy Families and that Gabby could get the treatment she needed. It’s a good program and it’s affordable. Healthy Families saved my daughter’s life. Without it, I don’t know how I would have paid for her treatment and surgery.
Gabby will need to take thyroid medicine for the rest of her life. She may even need further radiation treatments or chemotherapy but, I feel very positive. I’m very lucky to have my girl back.
