The Annie E. Casey Foundation publishes an annual KIDS COUNT Data Book, compiling the best data available on children and families in the nation and ranking every state on the well-being of its children. According to the report, overall improvements in national child well-being that began in the late 1990s stalled in the years just before the current economic downturn. While many suggest the nation is emerging from this downturn, most experts predict a slow recovery, with high levels of unemployment persisting for several years. Many low-income families will likely suffer deep social and economic consequences, and they are at high risk of being pushed even further off the path to opportunity and stability.
Children Now is the Annie E. Casey KIDS COUNT grantee for the state of California.
