For the first time, school districts across California will be required to monitor and address chronic absence as a metric in the new Local Control and Accountability Plan prescribed under the Local Control Funding Formula. Attendance Works and Children Now have created a new brief, Accountable for Attendance, to help school boards and districts, county offices of education and community partners deploy the best strategies for improving attendance.

Chronic absence—a red flag that a student is at risk academically— measures how many students miss 10% or more of school days for any reason, including unexcused or excused absences and suspensions.
